“THE FAMILY WE CHOOSE”

By Jane Dovidio-Gagliardo
So here we are… at the end of 2021. And what a year it has been. By this time most of us start reflecting on the past year. We let go of all the negative, begin embracing the new beginnings, and start taking a fresh look at what we plan to accomplish in the year ahead. We contemplate what we hope to achieve and what part we will play in making the world better? Can you see it? Can you feel it? A new horizon. A new beginning.
As we move closer to 2022, we can’t help but reminisce about who helped us get through this past year? Who were those who had faith in us when we didn’t have faith in ourselves? Who stood with us when times were rough? Who pulled us out of the quicksand of our sorrows and darkest moments? Who dried our tears and helped us to rise? Well, our God for sure. He never left our side. But also, the people who we choose to let into our circle were right there. Yes, they are the ones that helped to get us through, held us together, and never gave up on us. These are the people we felt closest to… we allowed them to see our most vulnerable side. Yes, we choose them. Most of the time they are not blood-related. There are no baby pics of us together. There are no young memories and no traditions from our early years. But what we have has been built a solid foundation. And sometimes, they know us better than we know ourselves. They are The Family We Choose.
Now some would argue that they choose us. But oh no; we found each other and stuck together through thick and thin. The Family We Choose will be there forever. They may not always agree with us. But they never judge us. They even look beyond some of our worst habits. Why you might ask? Because they love us unconditionally. They accept us as we are. They never try to change us and always respect us as we are. If we disagree and argue we still walk away in love because The Family We Choose, gives us back what we give them. The love is both real and mutual! When we choose these people, they are the reflection of the good and bad in us. We are a mirror of everyone around us that we choose to let into our circle. So, when it comes to The Family We Choose to be a part of our lives, we keep them forever in our hearts and lives. Even if we disagree there is still mutual respect for one another.
So, here’s my grand finale 2021 blog message to all of you. Love yourself. Love each other… and the people who you don’t choose. Send them on their way with love. Keep The Family You Choose close. Keep them Safe. Keep them Strong. Stay Fearless in your love for them. And remember to start 2022 with a good heart, a clear mind, big dreams, and fresh ideas. And always be good to YOU. Hope you all had a blessed Merry Christmas and praying you have a Happy New Year ahead. Much Love. Stay Safe. Stay Strong. Stay Fearless.
